Switch between “SEO — title tag” and “SEO — meta description” to write both parts of the preview. Google actually truncates by pixel width, so the 60/160 limits are safe approximations.

Character limits by platform

Meta Ads show about 125 characters of primary text before “See more”, with headlines best kept under 40 and descriptions under 30. Google responsive search ads allow 30 characters per headline, 90 per description and 15 per display path — these are hard limits.

For SEO, keep title tags around 50–60 characters and meta descriptions around 150–160 so they are not cut off in results. Instagram captions allow 2,200 characters and up to 30 hashtags, X posts 280 characters (each link counts as 23), and LinkedIn posts 3,000 characters with roughly the first 210 shown before “see more”.

Why counts can differ slightly

Platforms count some characters differently — for example X counts many emoji as two characters and Google truncates titles by pixel width rather than characters. Treat these limits as guard rails and keep the key message in the first line.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit for Google responsive search ad headlines?

Each headline can be up to 30 characters, and each description up to 90 characters. You can add up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions per ad.

How long should a meta description be?

Aim for about 150–160 characters. Google may show more or less depending on the device and query, so put the most important words first.

How many characters of a Meta ad’s primary text are visible?

Around 125 characters are shown before the text is truncated with “See more” in most placements. Longer text is allowed but hidden.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes. Every platform counts spaces and punctuation towards the limit, and this counter does too.

Is my copy saved anywhere?

No. Everything is counted in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
